About Dr. Chen

Dr. YT Chen co-founded Propel Sports and Orthobiologics after a long career in Army and academic medicine. He is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, and Pain Medicine, and holds the RMSK credential in musculoskeletal ultrasound. That combination lets him treat the full arc of a painful problem: the tendon or joint that started it, the nerve that keeps signaling it, and the rehabilitation that gets you back to activity.

He earned his medical degree at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, trained in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and completed fellowships in non-operative sports medicine at Stanford and in pain medicine through the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel after service that included deployment to Afghanistan as a battalion surgeon.

At Walter Reed National Military Medical Center he served as Deputy Service Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and directed the Sports Medicine and Ultrasound Clinics, supervising sports medicine and pain fellows and PM&R residents. Earlier, he led the Interdisciplinary Pain Management Center at Evans Army Community Hospital at Fort Carson, Colorado. Walter Reed named him an Associate Master Clinician in 2026.

Dr. Chen is an Assistant Professor at the Uniformed Services University and a long-standing course director and faculty member for national ultrasound and orthobiologics workshops. He has described new ultrasound-guided nerve treatments for resistant tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, and outer hip pain in the medical literature. His practice spans orthobiologics, joint denervation, peripheral nerve stimulation, spine procedures, electrodiagnostic testing, and physician-performed medical acupuncture. He speaks conversational Mandarin.

What to expect at your visit

  1. 1.

    We listen first

Your visit opens with a real conversation: how the problem started, what you have already tried, and the activity you want back.

  2. 2.

    Exam and in-office ultrasound

A hands-on exam, then ultrasound at the exam table, often while you move, so your physician can see the tendon, joint, or nerve involved.

  3. 3.

    A clear diagnosis and plan

You leave knowing what is wrong and what your options are, from strength-based rehab to procedures, and why we recommend each one.

  4. 4.

    Treatment and follow-through

Most procedures happen here in the office. We coordinate with your physical therapist and check progress against the goals you set.
